Read the following explanation about
narrative!
- Definition
A narrative text is a text that
entertains and instructs the readers. It entertains because it deals
with the unusual and unexpected development of events. It instructs
because it teaches readers that problems should be confronted, and
attempts made to resolve them. A narrative text may have only one
complication and resolution but another text may have more than one
complication and resolution.
- Social function ( what the writer wants with the text )
To amuse,
entertain and deal with actual or vicarious experience
- Generic structure
Orientation: tells
the occurrence, scene, time and introduces the participants.
Complication:
elaborates the problem solved by the character.
Resolution:
describes the solution, for better or for worse.
- Language features
- Focus on specific participants ( snow white, the fox, the farmer, ali baba )
- Use of past tense ( visited, came, was, were )
- Use of temporal conjunction ( after that, then, finally )
- Use of temporal circumstances ( once upon time, one day, long ago )
- Use of action verbs (walked, went out, ran away )
- Use saying verbs ( said, told, asked, answered )
- Use of circumstance of place ( at the river bank, in the palace, in the forest )
- The kind of narrative
Fable: moral
stories, usually about animals, making them seem like human beings.
Legend: stories
from the past which may not be based on fact.
Folk tale:
traditional stories passed down from one generation to the next.
Fairy tale:
children’s stories about fairies, princesses, giants, etc.
